What are the drawbacks of Clear?

While Clear offers many benefits for expedited airport security, there are a few potential drawbacks to consider:

  1. Cost: Clear membership is relatively expensive compared to other airport security programs. It currently costs $179 per year for an individual membership, although discounts may be available for certain groups such as Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus members.

  2. Limited Availability: Clear is not available at all airports, so if you frequently travel through airports without Clear lanes, the membership may not be as useful to you.

  3. Limited Benefits: Clear does not provide access to expedited screening benefits like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. So if you want to speed up the screening process in addition to skipping the ID check and security line, you will need to have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry as well.

  4. Privacy Concerns: Some people may be uncomfortable with the collection and storage of their biometric data by Clear. While Clear states that it uses strong encryption to protect its members' data, there is always a risk of a security breach or data misuse.

  5. Limited Guest Privileges: Clear members are allowed to bring one adult guest and up to three children under 18 with them through the Clear lane. However, if you frequently travel with more than one adult guest or want to bring guests who are not family members, Clear may not be the best choice for you.
